A dozen of the most beloved Bulgarian films of all time, e.g. "Orchestar bez ime", "The Boy Goes Away", "Matriarchy", "The Peasant with the Wheel" and others are the work of Lyudmil Kirkov (1933 - 1995), born in Vratsa. His bas-relief, unveiled in 2019 (on May 24, Enlightenment and Cyrillic Day), was sculpted by Milen Kamenov.
The idea of a monument to Kirkov is an initiative committee chaired by Filip Trifonov, the actor who played the lead role in the 1971 film The Boy Goes Away. The bas-relief combines the shape of a film strip with a bust of the director. A fountain was added under the statue so that drinking its water becomes a symbolic bow to Kirkov's talent.
With fifteen amazing works, Kirkov is one of the greatest in the local film industry. The titles of all his films are written in golden letters on the Vratchanskiat limestone plinth of his bas-relief.
