Lakatnishki Skali Rock Phenomenon

Get ready to be amazed by the stunning Lakatnikshki Skali (Lakatnik Rocks)! These incredible natural wonders are a series of breathtaking escarpments, slopes, pyramids, pillars, caves, and karst springs that are situated on the left bank of the Iskar River, nestled between the Opletnenska and Proboinitsa rivers. The name of these impressive rocks, and the renowned train station below them, derives from the sharp bend of the Iskar River that resembles an elbow, known as "lakat" in Bulgarian.

These extraordinary Lakatnik rocks are primarily composed of limestone and sandstone deposits from different geological eras, creating a remarkable tapestry of colors and textures. The formation of this impressive rock set is linked to the drainage of the Sofia Pliocene basin north through the Old Mountain and the Iskar Gorge, as the ancient sea receded. Over time, the deep erosion process has caused numerous subsides, contributing to the formation of a complex multi-layered karst system.

Discover the majestic beauty of the Lakatnish Rocks: Explore the most popular mountaineering destination in Bulgaria

In 1989, the Lakatnik rocks were declared a natural landmark, and they now fall within the renowned Vratsa Mountain Nature Park. One of the most alluring parts of this escarpment is the Temnata Dupka (Dark Hole) and the Zhytolyub karst spring, which attract visitors from all over the world throughout the year. These cliffs mark the birthplace of Bulgarian alpinism, with the first use of an Alpine rope nationwide taking place here in 1925. If you travel to the area by car or train from Sofia, you'll notice a charming red cottage perched on the rocks – that's the Eagle's Nest shelter. This historic shelter was constructed in 1938 by climbers from the Bulgarian Alpine Club, the precursor to the Bulgarian Climbing and Mountaineering Federation.
