History in stone: The role of Kurtpashova Tower in the past of Vratsa

The Kurtpashova Tower is a true remnant of the Middle Ages, with its original castle-like silhouette. According to legend, the tower belonged to Kurtpasha, a local feudal lord, who used it as a fortified residence. But this is not just a matter of legend; the tower was also a refuge for local residents fleeing attacks during Turkish rule. Vratsa was a garrison town and a road settlement, which during that time was repeatedly devastated and rebuilt. The tower's design includes numerous gun ports at the top through which hot oil or tar is poured onto enemies attempting to invade.

The Kurtpashova Tower dates from the 17th century, but its elements and construction method suggest continuity with Bulgarian fortress construction from the 14th century. This may be the time when the foundations of the tower were built. The tower has four floors, with the first floor intended for living quarters and defense. The second floor is separated from the first by a two-beam construction filled with mortar and stones, which serves as fire protection. The walls are 1.5 m thick at the bottom and taper to 90 cm on the upper floors. Access to the interior of the tower was provided by a portable ladder, which was brought inside in any dangerous situation.

The Kurtpashova Tower has been an integral part of the history and culture of Vratsa for centuries. The tower is also associated with the Ayans, local boyars who, after the Ottoman invasion of the Balkan Peninsula, converted to Islam in order to retain their possessions and status, including the privilege of collecting local taxes. This made them enemies among the dispossessed natives. The tower also served as a refuge for those fleeing outside attacks, which is why its design included numerous gun ports at the top through which hot oil or tar was poured onto enemies attempting to invade.
